Beer Brewers & Wine Makers Use Air Locks aka fermentation locks:
An Airlock is a small, usually plastic device that can be fitted into a plastic lid with a rubber grommet or into a carboy bung that acts as a one-way/Check valve during the fermentation process.
An Airlock is a small, usually plastic device that can be fitted into a plastic lid with a rubber grommet or into a carboy bung that acts as a one-way/Check valve during the fermentation process.
- Airlocks allow the gas pressure built up within your fermenter to escape without allowing outside air to get back in and contaminate the product.
- There are two main types of airlocks: a Three-Piece Airlock and an S-Bubble type Airlock.
- Both are filled partially with water, sanitizer or vodka and fitted onto the bucket or bung.
- Larger fermentation's utilize a blow off tube, which is a piece of tubing (see our BB610x5) inserted into a drilled stopper with the other end placed into a container with water.
- The pressure escapes through the blow off tube and bubbles from under the waters surface, ensuring air does not enter back through the tube.
